Why is moving so effective at fostering serenity?
Because moving uses the laws of nature. “My car runs without refueling” – such a statement would at best raise an eyebrow and definitely mark you as crazy. But the statement “I can work day and night without regenerating” is considered much more plausible by many people, even though it contradicts the laws of nature just as much as the first statement. The autonomic nervous system in our body includes the two functions “activity” (sympathetic) and “regeneration” (parasympathetic), and only the use of both functions ensures a good quality of life.
moving is perfectly suited to efficiently apply the natural law – that “refueling” is as important as being active – in everyday life. Slow movement has been an efficient “refueling station” for regeneration since time immemorial, because “slow motion” activates the part of the autonomic nervous system responsible for recovery. Think of moving as an energy station where you naturally stop to refill your “energy tank,” just as you would refuel your car. A short “pit stop” with moving during your day keeps your energy tank full and allows you to respond calmly to the demands of everyday life.
